Phase Synchronization in Railway Timetables

چکیده
Timetable construction belongs to the most important optimization problems in public transport. Finding optimal or near-optimal timetables under the subsidiary conditions of minimizing travel times and other criteria is a targeted contribution to the functioning of public transport. In addition to efficiency (given, e.g., by minimal average travel times), a significant feature of a timetable is its robustness against delay propagation. Here we study the balance of efficiency and robustness in long-distance railway timetables (in particular the current long-distance railway timetable in Germany) from the perspective of synchronization, exploiting the fact that a major part of the trains run nearly periodically. We find that synchronization is highest at intermediate-sized stations. We argue that this synchronization perspective opens a new avenue towards an understanding of railway timetables by representing them as spatio-temporal phase patterns. Robustness and efficiency can then be viewed as properties of this phase

Developing railway timetables which guarantee a better service
In order to improve passenger service, a waiting cost function, weighting different types of waiting times and late arrivals, is designed and minimised. The approach is applied to a small part of the Belgian railway network. In the first phase of the approach, ideal buffer times are calculated to safeguard connections when the arriving train is late. These buffer times are based on the delay di...
متن کاملRailway Passenger Service Timetable Design
The aim of this paper is to analyze and to improve the current planning process of the passenger railway service. At first, the state-of-the-art in research is presented. Given the recent changes in legislature allowing competitors to enter the railway industry in Europe, also known as liberalization of railways, the current way of planning does not reflect the situation anymore. The original p...
متن کاملEvaluating Disturbance Robustness of Railway Schedules
Railway traffic is operated according to a detailed schedule, specifying for each train its path through the network plus arrival and departure times at its scheduled stops. During daily operations, disturbances perturb the plan and dispatchers take action in order to keep operations feasible and to limit delay propagation. This paper presents a thorough assessment of the possible application o...
متن کاملApproaches to a real-world train timetabling problem in a railway node
We consider the Train Timetabling Problem (TTP) in a railway node (i.e. a set of stations in an urban area interconnected by tracks), which calls for determining the best schedule for a given set of trains during a given time horizon, while satisfying several track operational constraints. In particular, we consider the context of a highly congested railway node in which different Train Operato...
متن کاملSymmetry for Periodic Railway Timetables
Periodic timetabling for railway networks is usually modeled by the Periodic Event Scheduling Problem (PESP). This model permits to express many requirements that practitioners impose on periodic railway timetables. We discuss a requirement practitioners are asking for, but which, so far, has not been the topic of mathematical studies: the concept of symmetry. Several motivations why symmetric ...
